The term “semi precious” has been rejected by all the major gem trade organizations of the world including the CIBJO as it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I have sold alexandrites which, under the old semi precious/precious system are regarded as semi for prices up to $90,000 per carat – nothing semi about that is there. I recently sold a 21ct. demantoid garnet – which would have been classed as semi – for $22,000 per carat. The whole system of classifying gems in this way is absolute nonsense which why it has now been rejected by the professionals. I only wish it would people would realize that it has no meaning at all and that all gems are precious in their own right.
Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite which was discovered in the Meralani (Merelani) Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967, near the city of Arusha. It is used as a gemstone. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet, and burgundy depending on crystal orientation.”
