Confused, hurt, anxious. Waitlisted from WASHU, honestly expected to be accepted. Please explain! Stats below. ?
i got deferred from yale early action. and today, i got waitlisted by washington, which i thought i’d easily get into, because my stats (below) are good and they’ve been in contact with me since 9th grade.
i am valedictorian from 410 seniors from a public school in la, ca.
i’m middle class korean female. not 1st generation. obviously not minority.
fluent in korean, english, spanish
i have a 4. 72 weighteed cumulative gpa.
i consider myself hardworking, intellectually curious, artistically talented.
i am a psychology major with pre-med goal. career goal: endocrinologist
by end of high school, i will have taken 11 AP classes and gotten a 4/5 on each and an A in each class.
i am president of key club and red cross club.
700+ hrs of community service, 300 just from the hospital
creative, thoughtful essays
sparkling recommendation letters
3 yr varsity tennis, 8 yrs competitive piano
published a children’s science book
won silver congressional medal for volunteering

Obviously you did everything in your power to be prepared for college, so be proud of yourself. I’m sorry you didn’t get in to Wash U, but remember that admissions is an art, not a science – the good schools have to reject thousands of super talented, hardworking, qualified kids, just because there is not enough room. I have no idea why the admissions team accepts certain people and rejects others – it doesn’t seem to make much sense. Sometimes I think it’s totally arbitrary… because really, when you have 100 equally qualified applicants, how in the world do you choose which 8 get in?
It doesn’t mean that you couldn’t have done well at Wash U – and it doesn’t mean you won’t do well somewhere else. You certainly didn’t “fail”, though that may be how it feels. It really is just the luck of the draw, and completely beyond your control, so please don’t beat yourself up about this. I was rejected from a much less prestigious university than I was accepted to… go figure. I was like “you’re kidding, right?!” But, I went to the better school and did very well, so all’s well that ends well. Your story will end well too.
Little setbacks are part of life, and all things considered, this is a pretty safe way to learn about how to manage disappointment. You can and will get into great schools, and have a very successful college experience.

With competitive universities, it often goes beyond academics. The vast majority of people who apply to places like Brown and Columbia are extremely well qualified, academically. But the schools only let in about 10-15% of applicants. They’re deciding based on other factors.
You’ve applied to some really competitive schools. You may well get into some of those. I think you’re going to get into UCSD and probably Emory. The rest, you’ll have to see.
I know that doesn’t help you feel better, but you’ve applied to so many very competitive schools. We’ll have to see.

I know how you’re feeling. I also applied to Wash U expecting to be admitted and today found that I ended up on the wait list, much to my disappointment. Like you, I am a varsity athlete (go tennis :] ), a musician, heavily involved in extracurriculars, and a National Merit Finalist. I can’t match your impressive community service record, but I do volunteer, and in addition I have slightly better SAT and ACT scores (2310/34). I find it hard to believe that neither of us has been accepted. I’ve done some research (check out collegeconfidential.com) and it seems like waitlisting is a bit of an issue at Wash U.
P.S. – were you planning on listing Washington as your #1 school with NMSC?
