Just a word processor to write up the report, and any laptop will do. MS Office is best because some of the software that comes with our energy audit tools export data as Office 97 documents.

If you buy a high end blower door, it will come with software and sometimes its own computer. If you purchase a thermal imaging camera, the data will be transferred from the SD card to imaging software (Windows based again) that allows you to annotate the images and export a MS Word Document. If you purchase a data logger it will likely be independent from the computer with an optional download.

So bottom line:
1) Laptop (any will do)
2) Windows XP or Visa (for compatability reasons)
3) A SD card reader
4) MS Office (at least excel and MS word)

The real money is tied up in things like a blower door ($ 3000), a thermal imaging camera ($ 8000 to $ 12000), air flow meters, moisture meters, IR thermometers, data loggers, digital cameras and other things you need to verify measurements.

Of course there are people that simply do a blower door test and fill out a checklist. Some audits do even less — they simply look around and make notes like “change shower head” and give you an initialed checklist with a signature on the bottom.

Contrast this with a professional that can look at a wall and tell you exactly where the insulation is missing http://www.nlcpr.com/MissingInsulation.php and what to do about it. The level of professionalism you plan to provide very much determines your computer needs.

Hope this helps.
