Question : Why is my computer running SO slow? It seems to be locking up too?
For the last week, and intermittently for two weeks my computer keeps running so slow. Sometimes, the screen(s) that I have open lock up.

I checked to see if I needed to defrag my computer. The audit or whatever that is, says that I do not need to defrag. I’m inclined to do it anyway. I read somewhere that when I check to see if I need to defrag and the program indicates that there’s no need to at this time that I shouldnt defrag it unless it’s warranted. Not that it would hurt to do it anyway…

I ran a malware software program: Malwarebytes is the program name. I ran a deep scan and it indicated that there were no spyware/malware installed or showing up.

I use VIPER virus software and it does a scan every morning. No detectable virus at this time.

I do watch quite a bit of media online. I also have my Yahoo window open frequently (ha ha always)

I almost always have 2 word documents open at the same time (along with media and yahoo email page)

I likely also have other website up that I am researching.

I have these open for convenience. Im seeking new employment and keep my job search windows open, the yahoo email window open so I can respond to job postings, the word doc’s are my resume and cover letter documents open…all this open while I have the media page open. Watching a program while I work.

So, the computer tells me that there is no spyware/malware interfering. The virus scan comes back clean. The defrag indication says I’m okay there and I dont need to defrag.

Someone mentioned that I should clean the registry. I have no idea what that means or how to do it or even if it’s needed.

Three months ago, my buddy that works at AMD said he added more memory on here for me. So, apparently I’m good there.

Can some of you IT guru’s help me out? Please, if it’s not a tremendous imposition, explain the solution (if you can identify the problem) in detail…detail…detail. Respond as though I am five years old….please. I wont take offense. Actually, it’s likely that a five year old will understand better than I so that may have been a bad example…but you know what I mean.

Also, when I try to (x) out or close some of the open windows when the computer is locking up or going so so so slow. The computer will not even let me (x) out or close that page. Argh….

Other than having possibly too many windows open at once, what do you suggest I do? Perhaps I just shouldnt have THAT many windows open at once. It’s not that I need a lightening fast computer — although that would be terrific — but it is SO slow and locks up.

Help please! Many of you are so tremendously intelligent and knowing — I just need help and I’m grateful for it!

Thanks in advance!

Take care!!

Thank you Tassler and MS!! Thank you So very Much!!! I get so frustrated with it! Tassler — yes, I believe you are likely correct. My computer is about 7 years old or so. Yes, you are right, they get old fast…newer better and faster computers always outlasting outdoing and out computerrring the generations before the last launch. Cant afford a new one now….and I need to get a laptop as well. I do international trade and I am ALWAYS on my computer. Im an addict! ha ha. Anyway! Thanks to you two…all of you for your kindness and your great help and suggestions!
