Question : Am I legally allowed to be under 2 medical insurance plans at the same time?
When I get married next week I’ll be eligible to go on my wifes plan from her job. Also, my boss just said he’s getting us medical if we want it. So…would I be allowed to go on both plans or is it a “only-one-plan” kind of thing?

Technically you can be on two plans, but it is incredibly stupid. You do not get more coverage by being on two plans. The amount that one plan pays plus the amount that the other plan pays is the same amount as one plan would have paid if you had been on only one plan. You pay the same amount whether you are on one plan, two plans, or fifty plans. The only difference is that it can take months to determine which of the plans has to pay, and you have to make sure the doctor, hospital, or whatever, gets paid on time, even if the insurance companies have not yet figured out which of them must pay. If you have more than one plan and none of them has yet paid, then you have to pay the entire bill yourself (the same amount as if you had no insurance) and wait to be reimbursed when the insurance companies figure out which of them has to pay. If you have only one plan, then the insurance company knows immediately that plan is the one that must pay, so it pays sooner, which is better for you.

You can have both, but if I was your boss and found out you had other coverage for free and I was paying for your additional coverage then I wouldn’t be your boss anymore. Your employer or her employer may not allow you to have other coverage, but even if they don’t exclude you from doing it you are indeed wasting someone’s money.

It is perfectly legal but understand that you don’t get your benefits paid more than once. Your employer’s plan would be the primary coverage to you while any other plan that shows you as dependent would be secondary. The primary provider pays first and the remaining amount would be adjusted by the secondary company. It is called the Coordination of Benefits rule (if you want to look it up).
Unless your and your wife’s employer are paying 100% of the premium (not likely) it is usually not cost effective to be covered under two health insurance plans.

It should be a yes although you should check to make sure how both coverages work because they could contradict or cover the same thing and end up costing you two more in the long run. You can always have multiple insurances I have HMO from my father and used to be on medicaid (all kids) at the same time. A lot of disabled people have medicare and medicaid if they do not make enough (those on SSDI and SSI). But why spend money on both plans if they don’t compliment each other? Because ur boss saying you get medical means he’s taking it from your check if you opt in and her premium would go up as well. Also it may not be worth it if they have 2 completely different provider types because again they wont be able to compliment one another although it would get you greater options for what doctors you can go to for different things.

You can if you want to but it is an extra unnecessary expense dont you think? If there is a claim, you can only bill one company, not both. So I would go on whichever insurance has the best benefits and the lowest premiums.
