The IRS will typically ask whatever questions they ask or look at discrepancies they know about. Any information you give them can be the basis for more questions. Give them as little information as possible and admit nothing.
You can have a lawyer present, but you must inform the IRS of this in advance. You may also record the audit, if you have informed the IRS in advance.
It’s best to have a tax accountant with you when you go to the audit. You will need to arrive at the audit with all pertinent paperwork to back up all of the items on your return.
The auditor will focus on items that the IRS computer system deemed ‘odd’. You getting called in for an actual audit means that you got thru 2 prior levels –> first, a computer based score on your return and second, an internal review of your return. Your return was probably pulled with some issues that the reviewer had questions on.
