Regardless of where you are in your career as a financial planner, this book will get you on the right path and keep you there. I have read many books on financial planning and forming a financial planning practice and Nancy takes you step by step from your first inclination to become a planner to finding a space for your office. The web sites and books she mentions in the book are worth most of the price. Jeffrey Rattiner’s book “Getting Started as Financial Planner” is a nice complement to Nancy’s book but start with hers. Thank You Nancy for writing and updating this book. -

I knew in 2000 that I wanted to be a financial planner, however, I couldn’t find anyone to help me. The only folks willing to “guide” me at the onset were multi-level organizations, so that’s how I got my start. However, I learned very early on that multi-level companies put their own interests ahead of my own and their brand of “financial planning” was selling–I wanted to become a “trusted advisor.” In a search for real advice from a neutral source, I stumbled upon Nancy’s book on Amazon. I bought it online so I could get the ebook as well. The ebook was devoured well before the hardcopy ever arrived two days later, and I’ve never looked back.Nancy is a true mentor. Knowing that she can’t possibly mentor all who need it, she’s written and updated this book several times for those who really want a serious career in financial planning. The content is pure “how-to,” but it doesn’t stop there. The last chapter of the book is essentially the progress reports of the financial planners Nancy has mentored throughout her career providing valuable information on what worked and what didn’t work for them–awesome information. That chapter alone helped me avoid many potholes I would have otherwise driven right into. She helped me learn what licensing I needed, what letters to put behind my name, how to market, how to stay out of trouble, and some very sound nurturing advice of keeping balance while trying to get it all together. As the years have flown by, she’s mentored me into the advisor I dreamed of becoming.
If you have questions and seek mentoring, you can connect with her through the avenues made available to you through this book. I took full advantage of all she offered, and probably pushed the envelope a little, too. Now, with 2010 around the corner, I’ve nearly completed 10 years in this industry. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the valuable guidance and advice offered by this generous, selfless, and nurturing woman’s book.
If you want to start a career in financial planning, this book is essential to getting off to a great start. It will be the best $55 you’ll spend on getting your career off the ground. If you’re serious, buy it!

Nancy does an extraordinary job of answering any question I could think of. One of my favorite parts of the book is her interviews with people in the field of financial planning. What makes it so powerful, for me, is that she gets updates from these folks every 2-3 years. So I get a real sense of how careers can evolve over time and what twists and turns are likely. Nancy provides an extraordinary gift to those of us just entering the field of financial planning. Thank you, Nancy!
