Question : Is password protecting considered encrypting?
I control users through active directory; the hierarchy of user groups control which server folders each user is allowed to view.
If I’m audited, is this considered encrypting the information?

Negative. That’s simply access control. Bitlocker ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/features/bitlocker.aspx ) and TrueCrypt ( http://www.truecrypt.org/ ) are for encrypting files. GPG ( http://www.gnupg.org/ ) and Digital ID’s ( http://www.verisign.com/authentication/digital-id/index.html ), also called e-mail SSL certificates are for encrypting e-mail. I find that Digital ID’s are easier than GPG.
