When did Equipment rental places start running a charge through the bank on the same day you rent it? me-300+?
Question : When did Equipment rental places start running a charge through the bank on the same day you rent it? me-300+?
I went to a local equipment rental place and rented a 100′ drain snake. They said they needed a credit card to put the $ 300+ deposit on. They ran it thru my bank the same day and then when I brought it back the next day they made a refund of the deposit minus the $ 63 charge for renting the equipment. The last time I did anything that required a large deposit, they ran my card through the credit card slider machine and held the charge slip back aside till I brought the rented item back and they would take the charge slip and proceed to tear it up instead of submitting it for payment. This new way is like I’m buying the equipment then returning it for a refund minus the rental charge. They even mark the deposit as a “SALE” on the receipt and mark the return receipt “REFUND”. It doesn’t seem right that they can do that and in my case it sent my bank account soaring into overdraft to the amount of $ 172+ in overdraft fees. A deposit is not a sale and a return is not a refund. Anyone else have this problem or know how to find out if this is legal?

I would talk to them and to the bank and ask to have it changed. Don’t know if it is legal or not, but it isn’t a good way to get repeat business!
It is not a “problem.” It’s routine nowadays. If your account overdrafted, then you were not using a credit card as you say. You were using a DEBIT card.
