Question : tax audits is there a limitation on how far back they can audit?
if it has been a while sense you file for your income taxes is there limit on how far the goverment can go back

Its 3 years after the return was due or the date it was filed, whichever is last. If you don’t file, the statute never starts running. If cases of fraud, there is no statute of limitations. The could theoretically audit Elvis if they could make a case for fraud.

If a tax return has not been filed or if fraud is suspected, the IRS can go back as far as they want.

If a tax return has been filed, it is 3 years from the actual filing date or 3 years after the following April 15, whichever is later.

As far as making you pay if you haven’t at all, there is no limit. As far as auditing filed returns, they always say to keep your info for 7 years for tax purposes, so I say 5-7 years.

I’m not aware that there is a limit to how far back the IRS can look to see if you have/have not paid your taxes. You might want to contact a Tax Lawyer. They should know the answer for sure and might be able to help you reduce fines/penalties with the IRS.

There are different statutes of limitations based on the circumstances at hand.

If no return was filed or the return was fraudulent, they can go back as far as they want.
