The American Revolution started in 1775 and was the first conflict in history fought in the name of universal philosophy of law, constitutional rights, and self-government. It ended in 1787 and gave birth to the United States of America. In order to determined whether the war revolutionary one has to refer back to their own definition of a revolution. The definition of a revolution is a big complete change in government as well as the society. According to the definition of a revolution, the American Revolution was not very revolutionary. Since a complete change in social and economical status did not occur.
Socially the war was not revolutionary because there was not a complete change in how other cultures and genders were treated. The only change that occurred was that white men could have even more rights. While the rights of other groups such as women, African Americans, and Native Americans were limited. For instance, the Native Americans were wrongly revoked the right to have land that was technically theirs. “All the land we have been speaking of belonged to the six nations. No part of it ever belonged to the king of England, and he could not give it to you.”(Doc. J). Another example is that for the women not a lot changed for them. Except having the right to vote. “The right of citizens of the united states shall not be denied or abridged by the united states or by any account of sex”(Doc. K). However despite Abigail Adam’s plea to her husband to “…Remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them then your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power in hands of the husband” (Doc F). Women were not viewed equally in the end
Economically the war was not revolutionary because it did not change a lot of economic status for people. For example, “…It seemed that the rebellion against British rule allowed a certain group of the colonial elite to replace those loyal to England. Give some benefits to small handovers and leave poor white working people and ternate farmers in very much their old situation”. (Doc. B). This quote shows that life for the poor working class stayed the same. In addition, since African Americans were discriminated against it made it harder for them to find decent paying jobs. Because of this they suffered economically. “Where are my prospects? To what shall I turn my hand? Shall I be a mechanic? No one will employ me; white boys won’t work with me. Shall I be a merchant? No one will have me in his office; white clerks won’t associate with me.” (Doc. E). This quote shows how blacks really didn’t have any options for employment.
Politically the war could be considered revolutionary. Since there was no longer a limited monarchy, women could now vote, and “all men are created equal.”(Doc. C), there was an end to primogeniture law; slavery was abolished in the north. Slavery being abolished was a big turning point in American History. A lot of people had difficulty accepting the idea of freeing slaves. For example the last two states to abolish slavery were Kentucky and Tennessee. (Doc. G)
In conclusion the American Revolution was not very revolutionary. This is because the definition of revolution is a complete change. While there were a lot of changes in politics; there were not a lot of changes in economic and social status. That is why it cannot be considered a proper revolution. To answer the question “Are we the country we set out to be?” simply, no. The constitution states that everyone should be equal and have equal opportunities. In the beginning that definitely was not true. African Americans were far from even being considered human compared to white men. Women were viewed as less than a man. And the Native Americans were simply viewed as just an obstacle of expansion. Even now different racial groups face discrimination and are still viewed as not equal.
