Question : Are non-profit credit relief places legit? My credit card company gave us the name and number of a place. .?
I called my cc company,asking for help at lowering my rate and monthly payment. They forwarded me to a “non-profit” company named Take charge America, is this a scam or legit?

The best thing to do to protect your credit and finding out about this company is to contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB). They will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Check with the BBB. Also yahoo the company name, you are likely to find lots of articless from people who used the if they did not do what they were supposed to. Always BEWARE of credit counseling company. I work at a law firm and you would not believe the amount of calls we get from people about credit counselingcompaniess. You said they are non-profit so do NOT give them money. The biggest complaint I hear is that the client paid for their services, he company negotiated lower payments, but then never applied the client money to their bills. The companies just keep the money and the client ends up worse than they were in the beginning. Double check EVERYTHING you sign!!!!!!!!

Check to see if they are a member of NFCC. These are legit, non-profit companies. Check this site for a NFCC member near you: http://www.nfcc.org/.
