It does depend on your niche of course (and I don’t know the Garden Centers business… but I do no something about marketing software). But in general going to trade shows may not be as cost-effective a marketing strategy as it might seem. There are other ways to reach your target audience that may be more effective for you. At the very least, if you go to tradeshows, make sure you’re putting in the investment of time and effort to make the most of it (arrange networking/customer meetings, plan a presentation at the show, get appropriate case studies ready, etc).

You need to think about your target customer (garden centers) and where and how they look for information to solve the problem your software is addressing (point of sale needs). If they’re looking online, then that’s where you need to be advertising/discussing your product. If they read certain magazines, then you need to publish case studies etc in those places. etc… Marketing is about getting the message out to your target customer base about a great solution to a problem they have (your software, of course). You need to put yourself in your customer’s shoes to figure out the best way to do it.
