Why is there a bankruptcy on my credit report, but only on 1 of the 3 credit bureau’s?
Question : Why is there a bankruptcy on my credit report, but only on 1 of the 3 credit bureau’s?
I had a credit card back in 2005 that I never paid on (really bad time of my life) and now it’s reading as a “Bankruptcy” even though I never once filed for bankruptcy!
I have a great credit score but that’s not good enough to get a loan for a house.
This error is showing up ONLY on Equifax, not the other two credit agencies. In order to get a loan for a house, I have to get this off of my credit report ASAP.
Can anybody please tell me how to dispute this & get it off of my credit report?? And why the heck the credit card company can even put “Bankruptcy” on my credit report?
I only have 3 days to get it wiped off (that’s when I have to have the loan obtained to buy a house I put an offer on.)
I’m calling them tomorrow morning. Any suggestions on what to tell them to get it off right there & then??

write a dispute to Equifax. They will contact the credit card co & have it settled in 30 days.
The Equifax website has the details. you can do it online
Of course, the unpaid debt will still be on your report.
First of all, don’t panic. Your mortgage company has seen things like this before, I promise. Call your mortgage lender and explain the situation to them. They will tell you what actions you need to take to prove to them that you have never had a bankrupcy. In most cases, all this will require is writing a formal letter noting the error and the steps you are taking to rectify it for your files. If you do not inform the mortgage company beforehand, they are going to find out and its going to look much better coming from you than from a random credit pull.
One thing working in your favor is that actual bankrupcy report on all three credit bureaus. Call Equifax and explain the situation to them. It is not necessary to tell them that you are trying to get a house. If they know that, they may think you have ulterior motives and mark your complaint fraudulent.
If this is a collection agency you have a good shot of having it removed altogether. Tell Equifax that you have NEVER filed for bankrupcy and ask them how you would go about proving that. Tell them that this tradeline is grossly in error and needs to be removed because it is causing your credit irreparable damage.
If Equifax will not remove it (and I’m almost sure they will) go to a free consultation with a local attorney and see what steps you need to take to get it removed. I’m not sure how you would go about proving that you have never filed for bankrupcy, but surely there is some sort of paperwork that would verify that. Once Equifax has that paperwork, they are in violation of the law if they do not delete the tradeline.
Best of luck to you, and don’t worry about your mortgage company, as long as you are honest with them I’m sure they will work around this with you.
