The Obama campaign turned off the security checking component of their credit card processing software. This is how so many contributions were made using names like Idiot Savant, Ima BadDonation, Bart Simpson, Family Guy, Daffy Duck, King Kong, O.J. Simpson, and Raela Odinga and on and on all under the $ 200 limit.

Question : Contacting businesses for donations?
I am currently a full time college student w/ little income and I am interested in attending a week long success seminar where college students learn valuable skills involving goal setting, becoming leaders, planning a career path, etc. I need to earn $ 2000, however, to attend. I am not a non-profit org or anything like that, but as a student can I approach businesses for financial support/funding? And if so, can they write it off in their taxes, like a grant?

I’ve never known of a person asking businesses for donations, but anybody who wants to give you money may do so and yes, it is a gift, which the giver uses as a tax deduction. If you can get past the person you first speak to to get to the owner there’s always a chance you can get lucky and the owner respect you for asking. I think that you will either be warmly received or told to go away. It sounds kind of like homeless people standing on corners asking for help, but people are free in the US to help whomever they wish. You will either luck out or strike out! First you might call the police department to ask if it’s illegal to ask for donations for yourself, because some cities have laws about asking. Good luck!

My great-aunt and neighbor both passed away this week so I was wanting to contribute to “Doctors Without Borders” Haiti relief efforts. I’m a young graduate student (so very strapped for cash, but I know every bit helps) with lack of social etiquette in the adult world, and I don’t know what I’m doing! Should I send a card saying a donation has been made in their “name” or “honor” ? Is it improper to tell them? How do I make a donation in “their name” if the name has to match my debit card information? I’m so confused!

When you make a charitable donation, a card is sent to the family to acknowledge the donation made by you in honor of the individual.

I am adding online donations to a website of a non-profit and I want an easy solution, very much like pasting the donation buttons that pay pal provides. I have pay pal but I want to give an option to non US donors that don’t necessarily have a pay pal account.

Customers don’t have to have a PayPal account to donate/pay with their credit card when using the PayPal system.

I’m looking for recommendations for a company (like pay-pal) that I can use to process credit card transactions online and by telephone when we take donations or sell merchandise. I’ve had several people complain about pay-pal and they don’t seem to let you process credit cards for donation by phone. Any ideas?
