I am 33, divorced, with chidren (10&12) and have gotten very serious about saving. I am putting 7% into my 401K and plan to up it to 10% within 2 years.
I have a checking and savings account that I used for my monthly expenses and keep a monthly budget and a small cushion. Four months ago, I opened a high yield savings account (5%) with the idea of putting my excess monthly income in there at the end of each month. the first three months I deposited between 300-500.
This month, I ran over budget because of some unforseen expenses that came up. I always keep a 600-700 cushion in my normal accounts for unexpected expenses. I am thinking that I should atleast deposit $ 100 into my high yield account this month even if it eats into my cushion a little. It is not like I am spending the money but I don’t want to take a chance on making a habit of not depositting atleast some money.
Is this a good idea to do?
I plan on taking the excess (maybe over $ 4-5000) at the end of every year and putting that into a roth ira.
I like the idea of a roth in case I need to withdraw for the kids education or for a house purchase.

Your idea is fine. If those “unforseen expenses” which jump up and bite all of us come up again, you still have the option of drawing down on the high yield savings account. I like your idea of creating a Roth IRA with the funds at the end of the year but it also functions as a safety net too.

Question : Is there a way that I can register for Summer classes even though my Financial Aid is all out for the year?
My advisor told me that I can’t register for Summer classes because I’ve used up all of my financial aid for the year. Is there another way that I can get more money so that I can register for Summer classes?
Also, how can I make sure that this doesn’t happen again next year?

Registering and taking summer classes is a totally different thing than getting financial aid for the summer. You can register for classes, just pay for them rather than get aid. The best way to make sure this doesn’t happen again is to work part time during the rest of the year, (spring break, fall break, christmas break) and save your cash so you can pay for those classes yourself. Summer semester is only a one or two classes so it won’t me as much as a regular long semester.

I have a bunch and I would prefer to pay one lender a month instead of four lenders. It just easier and more organized that way? But I don’t know if it is possible. I would love some info on this. Thanks to all who reply.

Yes. I have two from Sallie Mae and two from my state’s student loan. It’s sub and unsub loans. When you graduate or leave school for some other reason you have the option of consolidating at that time. But since you can consolidate only when you graduate or leave school it’s best to hold off until you’re done with a degree. Then you can work on getting a low interest rate based on your credit and the current ones you have.

Okay if I was you.. I would keep calling the bail bondsman.. He has a right to revoke your bond and your butt can be back in jail… I would just play it safe with the bail bonds.. they can be real jerks if they want to be!

Question : Even though I’m in middle school can i take an online community college class?
I would like to learn a foreign language in middle school and our classes for spanish are filled. I would like to have learned multiple languages by the time I am out of high school. Can i take an online foreign language course at a community college? If so could i use this on my college application in the future? Where do i go find out if this is possible and the cost? Thanks for your help!!!

I’m not sure about the online college thing, because some school don’t accept it in middle school, but you could try virtual school.
