I am 33, divorced, with chidren (10&12) and have gotten very serious about saving. I am putting 7% into my 401K and plan to up it to 10% within 2 years.
I have a checking and savings account that I used for my monthly expenses and keep a monthly budget and a small cushion. Four months ago, I opened a high yield savings account (5%) with the idea of putting my excess monthly income in there at the end of each month. the first three months I deposited between 300-500.
This month, I ran over budget because of some unforseen expenses that came up. I always keep a 600-700 cushion in my normal accounts for unexpected expenses. I am thinking that I should atleast deposit $ 100 into my high yield account this month even if it eats into my cushion a little. It is not like I am spending the money but I don’t want to take a chance on making a habit of not depositting atleast some money.
Is this a good idea to do?
I plan on taking the excess (maybe over $ 4-5000) at the end of every year and putting that into a roth ira.
I like the idea of a roth in case I need to withdraw for the kids education or for a house purchase.

Your idea is fine. If those “unforseen expenses” which jump up and bite all of us come up again, you still have the option of drawing down on the high yield savings account. I like your idea of creating a Roth IRA with the funds at the end of the year but it also functions as a safety net too.

I put my resume online at monster.com and thats in and maybe filled in a couple of details. But first i got a call from Bankers Life and Casualty Company and i let it go to my voicemail. I listened to it and they wanted to offer me a job. So i’m thinking all im looking for is an internship for this summer only before i go to school. So i searched it found that most people thought it was a scam so im going to disregard that message. Then i got a message from kforce financial accounting services and they want to talk to me about my resume. Is this company a hoax to because i just finished my freshman year at bryant university and i didn’t have more than a 3.2 gpa overall freshman year but i’ve had internships in accounting for the past three summers so i do have experience?

Do they have a job for you? Doubt because it’s a temp agency and their goal is to get a lot of resumes that they can throw at employers.
In the future instead of deciding everything is a scam, at least google the company!!

Howdy. After several years of attending different universities and accruing massive debt with still two years until a degree, I am now in the process of joining the Air Force so that I can get a career started and start paying off my loans.
My private loans have totaled up to 40K, and the government/state loans have totaled up to 15K. I am obviously looking into consolidating these loans since I am currently paying four different lenders. My credit is great so I am not worried about that. How should I go about approaching my situation and which lenders would you recommend?
I am also considering going back to college several years into the Air Force, which I will be able to get paid for by the military though. Will this cause any problems?

Just be careful. In the loan consolidation industry, some of the companies who claim to “reduce you debt by thousands” actually don’t pay any of your bills until they are close to charge off or being sold to a collection agency, then they make a settlement offer. While you’re paying them each month, they ‘sit’ on most of the money, waiting for the accounts to get so delinquent the companies will accept the settlement. Settlements reflect as the debt was paid less than the amount owed to the bank.

Hi, I’ve been in the Air Force for about 6 months and I’m currently in Tech School. I have the following issue: I’m buried in debt, mostly credit card debt. I had this debt before I joined the Air Force.
I was aware of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA, but didn’t really pay much attention to it until now. Also, I haven’t told my creditors that I’m in the military because I dont want them to know. I was scared for my creditos to find out, that I’m in the Air Force, because I heard that I could be punish here if I become deliquent in my accounts (reduce rank, loss of pay for some time, etc), so they dont know that I joined the military. Not to mention that I was behind in some of my credit cards. Therefore, in order to get my creditors to lower the interest, I told the creditors that I was unempolyed and that I was going through a financial hardship. As a result, some of my creditors lower my APR, which, in reality, wasn’t much. Others agreed not to reduce my interest. Now, I’m up to date, but I’m wasting most of my paycheck.
My point is that I lied to the creditors telling them that I was unemployed and that I was going through a financial hardship instead of telling them that I’m in the military.
This is my question: If I use the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) NOW, would my creditors hold me liable for lying? or do you think that my creditos would have to comply with the law and reduce my interest?
I’d really love to use theis act becuase all of my credit card’s interest would be reduce to 6 %

all the SSCRA will do is allow for them to drop your interest on debt accrued before enlisting to 6%. there are no other easements..and if you are in arrears, they are NOT obligated to drop your interest.
