It might be best to save it yourself. It really depends on the plan though. Many plans don’t kick in fully till a couple years after it started. (hope this doesn’t happen) say she passes in a year, you may only receive a very small portion of the benefit, possibly less than you paid in.
You really need to read the plan over top to bottom and find the best plan for your family’s needs.

In Florida, can you tell me how to transfer interest in home from mother to daughter?

Question : In Florida, can you tell me how to transfer interest in home from mother to daughter?
My dear friend’s mother is very ill and likely close to passing. Currently, my friend (who is a legal adult) shares a home with her mother however, the home is solely in the mother’s name. Being that her mother is so ill, her mother wants to transfer the rights to the property to pass to my friend so it doesn’t end up in probate. They live in Orange County, Florida and I have looked at the possibility of a quitclaim deed but not sure if that is the proper method. If possible, they would like to make it so that they both own this property as joint tenants with right of survivorship. Finding an attorney at this time is not very possible as they need this done as soon as possible since she may live past the next few days. Can anyone help me with this? I am taking care of it so that she can deal with more important matters.

Thank you!
Additions:
No heirs (she is the only issue), the mother is of sound mind, a Power of Attorney is being executed currently for all real estate transactions, not sure about the mortgage – checking into that, and the property is valued at approx $ 300K.

Lawyers are fast. They can also be sure that this is what you want to do, since there may be gift tax due which would not be due if it were inherited.

Global AIDS report shows gains in the prevention of mother to child continues the momentum strengthens towards the elimination of HIV and AIDS in children

Washington, DC (Vocus) 28 September 2010

Nicholas Hellmann, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, a statement released in response to AIDS Global Report.

“The 2010 report on universal access to HIV prevention, care and treatment that show today by WHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF to further progress in expanding the Global HIV / AIDS. We are especially due to the increased access to treatment for both pregnant women and children living with the virus and prevent the further expansion of programs for the mother-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) are encouraged, which represents over 90% of new infections in children.

“In countries most affected by the pandemic, the global medical community, more than half of pregnant women (53%) need PMTCT services to reach with anti-retroviral drugs. The fact that only 15% of women had access PMTCT drugs to clear five years ago shows the effects of global commitments to this type of prevention, which has been shown to significantly reduce new HIV infections in infants scale.

“The report also shows a dramatic increase in the number of children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), with an increase of 29% over the previous year. But in many countries, children still far behind adult access to treatment? less than a third of the children have to benefit in the treatment, and tested only a small proportion of HIV-exposed children shortly after birth. We know that early diagnosis of HIV infection and rapid initiation of treatment are essential in order to save young lives? and without treatment, about half of infected children die before the age of two.

“The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation works closely with many governments in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by this disease, and we saw the vital importance of national policy commitments in the fight against pandemic. More and more countries adopt new WHO guidelines for a program on the prevention and treatment of life? as crimes of a single dose of nevirapine is the most effective prophylaxis against HIV and used by an effective treatment for pregnant women with HIV? we continue to see dramatic progress.

“Reaching more mothers and children of high quality and prevention of HIV treatment services is also critical to the overall improvement of maternal health and child survival, two important aspects of the UNA? ™ s Millennium Development Goals. In a time, governments and global health officials rally behind these common objectives shows the progress report that we are on the right track? but without the continuation of political and financial commitments, we are endangering progress.

“We welcome the report and we look forward to further cooperation with WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF and other partners in the virtual elimination of pediatric AIDS in the world to achieve. We can not slow our progress or to lose momentum on this goal achievable. “

My mother died in Florida without a will.?

1

Question : My mother died in Florida without a will.?
My mother died last year. She did not have a will. Her only asset was a bank account. My sister and brother that live in Florida got an attorney and went to probate court and filed papers listing themselves as the only heirs. The problem is that they did not list the other three heirs. I recently found out that they got the funds from the bank account and split them. What option do the other children who were not listed as heirs have? I think that they had a legal duty to list all my mothers children as heirs. But, what do we do now?

It’s a civil matter, you and the other rightful heirs will have to sue your sister and brother-in-law in small claims court if you want any share in your mother’s assets. You might want to discuss your options with an attorney to decide if it is worth doing so.

Question : My mother is 52, with little savings. What advice can I give her to invest for retirement?
My mother is 52, and has very little savings if any. She recently ended up empty handed after a bitter divorce. She currently makes about $ 1200 – $ 1500 bi-weekly. What advice can I give her to pave the way to retirement this late in the game? The more specific, the better. Please give me some references if you can! Thanks!!

It is very hard to give specific advice without having access to the full story, and all of your mother’s financial information, as well as knowing her personal goals, dreams, and responsibilities.

At this point, she needs to save every dime possible, if she wants any chance of retiring at a fairly young age. The first step in this process is to drive her expenses to the absolute minimum. I don’t mean that she has to eat Top Ramen for the rest of her life, but she should do her best to minimize her fixed expenses, in order to be able to save the maximum amount of money possible. You will need to be careful on your method and manner of saving/investing this money, since she has a short time horizon, but a need for fast growth. This can be a challenge, because she is not really in a position to take huge risks, but she needs an above-average return.

You should speak to a financial planner in your area. If you want more specific advice, please provide more information.

I wish you and her the best of luck!

debt management vs credit card settlement for my 73YO mother?

1

Question : debt management vs credit card settlement for my 73YO mother?
she owes 25K on credit cards and unsecured loans. 1 option is Debt management, a higher payment over more time but less credit damage. Another is a settlement, less $ paid off sooner but seriously dinged credit. She still may move once in her life, meaning a lease or purchase. Suggestions?
credit card settlement

Answer by CatDad
- Debt settlement means deliberately defaulting on credit cards to attempt settlements. This is a risky tactic..whether you do it yourself or you hire a debt consolidation firm to do it. Creditors are under no obligation to settle and cannot be forced to do so, even if you default. Given the amount of debt the risk is high that the creditors would sue.
- Debt management means reduced interest and payments. Non profits firms like CCCS do not negotiate settlements…just reduced interest and payments..This would take a LONG time to pay off $ 25K…which could be an issue given your mother’s age.
- If she has no assets (house/savings) and SSI is her sole source of money, then she is judgement proof as SSI cannot be garnished for debt.
