Parents of first time college students ?
4Question : Parents of first time college students ?
My oldest, of four, starts college this Fall. Were/are you as surprised as I was about all the work involved in getting you child in. From that ACT, Fafsa, searching for grants, applying for scholarships, staying on top of financial aid in general, applying for loans, attending orientation seminar, dorm/housing application, meal plan, buying all the stuff for the dorm, ordering books, picking up books, work study program and your student getting their own job for it, parking permit, . . .
I have had a stack of paperwork on my computer printer for months that gets done and added to constantly for this. I just did not know there was so much to do, not that I/we wouldn’t have done it.

I’m not a parent, but I know my parents were always doing paperwork. It seemed I incessantly was signing things and filling things out. In addition, I did a lot of my own paperwork too. A lot of it wasn’t unexpected, medical, room mate survey, etc, but some of it was just repetetive. I almost wished they just had a person I could sit with and give all my information to for 45 minutes and be done with it.

Under COBRA, I believe you can only continue the policy as originally issued by work, not cherry pick coverage. For more info, see the Department of Labor website

Question on retirement planning – my parents?
1Question : Question on retirement planning – my parents?
My parents have asked me to help advise them on their retirement planning. They have set a tentative target date as June 2011. My mom will be 62 and my dad will be 64. They earn between $ 55 – 60 K, together, per year.
My mom’s pension will pay $ 7,200 per year. Between my dad’s 401(K) and their IRAs, they have about 120K saved. I’m guessing SS payments of about 24K per year. They also own 200 acres of farm land that they rent out. After property taxes and some land improvement expenses, they net about $ 8k per year on the land rental.
I’ve figured that on their 401(k) and IRAs that if they withdraw $ 7,200 per year, and assume 5% growth, those funds will last 32 years before they are exhausted (bringing my mom to age 94, and dad to age 96).
So … that comes to a yearly total retirement income of $ 46,400. After state and federal taxes the net (I think) would be closer to $ 45,200, or about $ 3,700 per month. That’s about 80% of their current income – probably OK to retire on.
Is my thinking right? Any advice?
Assume expenses at an average of $ 3,700 per month or slightly less. My parents don’t live “high on the hog”
House is paid for.
I’m almost certain that they would both retire with medical insurance…I’ll have to ask for sure.

advice,,,,yeah…you left out a very important factor in your plan…..expenses?
the “average” is not important….
you need to calculate their exact monthly expense in order to correctly answer your question….
i assume a pro or your parents will be handling this and not you…

Parents, if your teen became pregnant, would you send her out of town/state to a private home for girls?
28Question : Parents, if your teen became pregnant, would you send her out of town/state to a private home for girls?
Would a loving residential setting be a consideration you’d make so that she could avoid the embarassment, shame, ridicule and gossip of her familiar surroundings? Would this be old-fashioned nowadays or would you find a home for pregnant teens (16-19) a good idea? This home would provide life skills training, budgeting and financial planning, healthy lifestyle lessons, parenting skills, social etiquette and conversation skills and planned parenthood classes. Your daughter would be required to continue her education, volunteer at a Assisted Living Home and Journal her stay at the Home. This would be her “home away from home” and she’d share a room with another female. They would have housekeeping chores and be supervised 24/7, not imprisoned but not have unrestricted freedom, either. Do you feel such an environment would be advantageous for a pregnant teen? The father of the baby could visit only with parental consent. Families could visit anytime if not interferring with school.
“Sending” her out of town/state only if she wants to go, of course. If the decision was made to give the baby up for adoption instead of terminating the pregnancy, would a loving residential home be an option for her? She would be required to continue her education, attend planned parenthood classes, volunteer at a Assisted Living Home and enjoy social and cultural events, under 24/7 supervision. How much would you pay monthly for her care? She would be taught teambuilding, social etiquette and conversational skills, budgeting and finance and required to Journal her stay while at her “home away from home.” Please elaborate as much as you’d like. Remember, she is NOT being forced to go away. The decision is made as a family in her best interest and that of your grandchild. I’m interested in your detailed comments and feedback.
I see that using the word “send” was a poor choice. The question isn’t to cast flesh of your flesh and bone of your bone into medieval times for torture because she made a mistake. I appreciate all the answers coming in as it’s helping with my survey/research. I have posed the question on a more “regulated” site and have received quite different responses. I’m not looking for answers that pleases me. I want to know what parents think. Of course, I’ve no idea if parents are answering as well as kids. A more “controlled” study is being done. Keep the answers coming!
For the uninformed, there are many residential places for pregnant teens in the US today, all paid for by your tax dollars. They are for “bad girls.” Just so you’ll know also, the question isn’t aimed at a situation I know of personally. I am sure there are teenagers who wish their parents felt as most of you feel but the reality is, not all parents support their children. Not all parents are good parents, themselves! Thanks for your answers.

Must I include student loans in debt-to-income ratio if my parents pay my student loans?
3Question : Must I include student loans in debt-to-income ratio if my parents pay my student loans?
I am going to apply for mortgage pre-approval. My student loans are in my name, but my parents pay the monthly bill. Do I have to include the loans in my debt-to-income ratio if my parents pay the monthly bill? Will the lender accept canceled checks to prove my parents pay the student loan?

Yes you do. Your parents are not under any legal obligation to pay the loans and could stop at any time. You can explain the situation to the lender and they may might make an accommodation, but its unlikely.
